So over Christmas break the hubby had 2 whole nights to ourselves while the kids were at his parents house. We always try and squeeze in a movie on these trips and this time we went to see Aquaman. I mean… Jason Momoa is basically shirtless and wet almost the entire movie… what’s not to love? And it wouldn’t hurt if he looked at me like that… haha

His female co-star was Amber Heard, who ditched her signature blonde locks for bright red flowing hair. I thought she looked so beautiful, my desire for shock and awe took over and I get the idea of changing up my look and going fire truck red into my head. And once I have an idea in my head, it’s pretty hard to get it out.

I started pinteresting the hell out of it and found some pretty cool options for my major look change. The next step was finding a good hair salon that won’t break the bank or my hair. There’s a Redken salon not far from me that I’ve been to a couple of times, so i scheduled a consultation. Well right after i checked out this Snapchat filter …

And boy was that an interesting visit. Basically the girl tells me that since my hair is naturally so dark and has been dyed so many times, the hair will need to be completely stripped of all color, down to white. So that it can be then colored with a “fashion color”. And you know what that was going to cost me??? $436 !!! Just to get it red. Then i would have to come back for color touch ups every 3-6 weeks which will cost 1-2 hundred dollars every visit. Wtf???

I even posted in a mom group to ask if that was outrageous and about 90% of the answers say that was way too much. A couple of hairstylists said that sounds about right because so much work goes into it and you get what you pay for. A couple of girls actually told me to go to Sally’s Beauty supply and do it myself. Bleaching my hair myself sounds a bit dangerous lol.

So after staring at my hair for several days, I made a decision. Before dying my hair anymore, I have to get it a bit healthier and strip the color from my hair naturally, at least to get it back to it’s original state. Just for a while.

I did some research and decided to go for a clarifying shampoo. Amazon had a lot of choices but i went with Elucence Volume Clarifying Shampoo. Basically it does the following (or at least supposed to):

  • Adds volume and body with Panthenol, Biotin, Hydrolyzed Wheat Proteins and Honey Extract
  • Purifies to remove toxins, mineral and medicinal buildup with White Willow Bark and Sage
  • Helps improve hair growth potential by normalizing scalp with Sage, Wheat Germ, Salicylic Acid
  • Adds lift at the roots by removing spent surface cells with Salicylic Acid for exfoliation

All good things right? we shall see. I’ll start using it today and will update you with the results. I’m hoping it will strip some of the hair color off and lighten it up, so the dark red that’s already in my hair will turn a bit lighter and possible give me the more dramatic look I want. Not as dramatic as Aquaman’s Amber Heard but it won’t cost me a minimum of $436… Just $16.
